An all-around disappointing fridge!!

ScottsKitchen 9/18/2026

TLDR: This new fridge was defective upon delivery, is poorly constructed with inferior materials and removes a lot of the exceptional qualities that made this a luxury fridge, especially when compared to its predecessor. I would skip this one, potentially KitchenAid altogether, and look elsewhere. I had a KRFC704FSS KitchenAid Refrigerator (I'll refer to it as the 704 and this new one as the 736) that after about 7 years stopped cooling in the main compartment. After several attempts to fix, we decided to replace in the hopes it would be more reliable moving forward. Sad that the 704 only lasted 7 years but I figured upgrading to the modern equivalent would be the right move. That was a HUGE mistake and I was wrong! The first thing is that this brand-new fridge was leaking in two places and would not make ice. There was a constant drip of water coming down the flap that seals the French doors (no idea where that was coming from since I believe the water tube is hidden in the hinge all the way across the other side). There was also a constant drip of water coming out of the ice dispenser, enough that it was dripping down the paddle pooling in the tray before dripping down the front of the fridge and onto the floor. Likely the ice making issue was related because in the first 48hours of having the fridge plugged in, cooled down, and 3-gallon purge completed, it only made 5 cubes! It was making 5 cubes every 6-8 hours after that which is basically worthless! Placing a thermometer in both the freezer and fridge compartment I could see it was at temp, so I have no idea why it wouldn't make a normal amount of ice, maybe the leak? Luckily, we caught this within the return window and contacted which they offered to replace it, but its currently backordered so I have to wait over a month for the replacement. Actual manufacturing issues aside, these fridges are in the "Luxury" category and cost quite a bit more than a standard fridge, as such I would expect a quality product and with the 704, it was. But Somewhere along the lines KitchenAid decided to cheap out, on pretty much everything, and this new fridge is just a huge disappointment! Shelves no longer attach from the sides and instead have the old style metal brackets that take up space and limit item height underneath which really reduces usable space a surprising amount. Not to mention are ugly. The 704 had ingeniously used height adjustable tabs on the sides of the fridge walls to allow the shelves free space under without any obstructions. The tradeoff was no split height adjustment for the two sides but well worth it! Lighting is awful, just awful! In the 704 there were lights in the back all the way up and down, plus light strips all up and down the sides and top, lighting was perfect, you could see everything in every corner. In this 736 there is no back lighting at all, so once you put anything in the front it casts shadows on the back items and makes it harder to see. There is a panel light at the top that looks like it should provide good light but similar scenario, the items on the top shelf cast shadows downward. There are a few more cube lights in the front down the sides, but nothing in the back. What a terrible thing to change! It was perfect before, now it's just bad! Backlighting is an important feature that seems they just forgot? In the 704 one of my favorite features was the removable door bins. This was a really nice touch that KitchenAid had done. You could leave the shelf in place but remove the bin holding all your items. This made it really easy to clean, and the shelf parts were both stout and elegant. Now they are the old method of a slide in shelf that feel like they have more flex and are flimsier with a cheap looking band of silver across it. Junk in comparison! Not to mention less of them. In the 704 there were 8 door shelves, 4 were large removable bins 1 large non removable, 2 slim on the ice maker and 1 was the butter container. But in the 736 there are 7 total 3 large, 4 slim, only one on the ice maker and no butter compartment. That limits space dramatically! Where did the butter compartment go? There was a really nice large butter compartment at the top of the right door on the 704. It was large enough to hold Costco size butter sticks in it and was a perfect spot at the top leaving plenty of room for the other shelves to hold items underneath. This seems like purely a cost savings thing because the 704 actually held more on the doors with the butter container there than this new 736 does now so I can't imagine they thought it would increase space. The ice maker no longer has a physical switch, on the 704 you would pop open the door flip the switch, close the door, done. Stops making ice while on vacation or whatever reason you had to stop it. With the 736, it needs an app! What a bad idea that was, especially because the fridge itself keeps disconnecting from the app requiring you to go through the full setup procedure again just about every time you want to check it. The app is pretty much useless anyway because it just allows you to set a temp (not even see the actual temp) and turn your max freeze or max cool settings on or off. Maybe this could be done on the door or front controls but that is so convoluted and a pain to work through it is not even worth messing with. They actually removed the + and - buttons on the door panel and you have to press the one button multiple times to cycle through temps, what a pain!! Speaking of the door control. On the 704, the panel was toward the top of the door, out of the way, easy to read just below eye level. Now on the 736, the panel is right where your hand goes, so every time you open the door you are accidentally touching buttons and hearing the chimes! Horrid placement. Who at KitchenAid thought that was a good idea!! Oh, and on the 704 the ice maker door had a nice spring-loaded latch that would easily latch just by swinging the door closed, the 736 has a manual lock that you have to snap into place. Nothing wrong with that method except the fact that it feels cheap and is an annoying step backward, especially when used to the prior feeling of the latch. They also decided to change the cube size, the 704 had small pyramid sized cubes that were just the right size, now (when it decides to make ice) it makes large pyramid cubes and less of them, Why? Why change something that was already perfect? I prefer cubes over crushed ice (I realize this is subjective), but now the cubes are so much larger it seems you have to crush them. But good luck with that because half the time you hit the panel and all the ice just dumps out all at once rather than a few cubes at a time. Then half of the very few cubes it took the fridge 24h to make are now on the floor! The crushed only stars crushing AFTER the initial rush of cubes have already fallen. Maybe this is just mine because its broken though? Still the cubes are too large, maybe, if they had a setting on the fridge to adjust the amount of water dispensed (and therefore the size of cube it yields) I could see this being a useful thing to accommodate more preferences but no, it is what it is, just one setting for large cubes. On the 736, the drawers no longer have knobs, you pull from the bottom of the drawer, the drawer fronts feel flimsy and the soft close hinges are much weaker than the 704, guessing they went with a weaker spring or something, overall, this cheapened the look and feel! Again this may be a preference thing but the knobs were both elegant and functional so removing them feels like another step back. Why did they get rid of the glass in the shelves? Glass feels much colder to the touch than this plastic (polycarbonate?) that they used. It easy to clear and seems like the premium choice of material. Sure, polycarbonate is stronger and more shatter resistant than standard glass, but in my experience, it also scratches much easier than glass and will look dingy in no time. This just plain feels cheap in what should be nothing but premium materials at this price point! There is also no longer an option for regular stainless, so it doesn't match my other stainless appliances. Why remove that option. I can only guess that more people are opting for the print resistant, but apparently, they forgot about all their loyal customers who already have (well had) matching appliances and now have to have a mismatch. And honestly, print resistance is laughable at best, there's fingerprints all over this just from pushing it in place after it was delivered. They did wipe up slightly easier than the 704 so I'll give it that but at least when I ordered the 704 I had a choice if I wanted it or not, now I am forced. I guess its not all bad, the layout of the freezer compartment is a slight improvement, moving the water filter is a tradeoff in where the space is taken up (bottom drawer vs top shelf) it's a tossup but probably for the better. The handles, while I prefer the look of the old, are larger and feel more planted so that's improved. I guess they got three things right. But if KitchenAid is touting this as an upgrade to the 700 series, they missed the mark on just about every aspect of this fridge and really is a HUGE downgrade. I am completely regretting getting rid of the 704 I should have just kept getting it fixed! I have a number of matching KitchenAid appliances I was happy with, which is why I stuck with them, but maybe it's time to start looking at alternatives. This is just an all-around disappointment!
